2024 MILEAGE - 2391.7

This morning, thunderstorms were raking our area, rumbling overhead. So, grateful for the option of our stationary bike, I hopped on it and rode while watching two episodes of The Chosen -- Season 4, Episode 3 (Moon to Blood) and Episode 4 (Calm Before).

This gave me a ride of 22.9 virtual miles in 1:58.

Friday, 6/28/2024 - 32nd outdoor ride of 2024

2024 MILEAGE - 2368.8

Yesterday Christy issued me a challenge -- to do, at some point in the next few days, a much more modest ride than I am accustomed to (say, in the neighborhood of a half hour). So today, I decided to take up this challenge. This was on top of me taking yesterday as a rest day—I had planned to ride in the afternoon, after I got home from picking Christy up at Metro, but by the time I got home I was too exhausted (having been up since 5:30 composing), so I granted myself some grace and climbed in bed to nap.

It seemed to me that today would be a good day to hold back. Last night Michelle and I went to an outdoor music performance, and on the way there we were walking along the sidewalk. At one point it dropped off rather precipitously (and, I would say, dangerously) some five inches or so. I didn't see this, and ended up tripping and falling. I was not seriously injured, but lost some blood from scrapes on my fingers. Some Good Samaritans passing by (including a nurse) helped patch me up, and I was soon good to go.

However, I fell on my side and my face. My chest and rib area are still tender, as is my shoulder where I wrenched it on the way down, so a scaled back day today for riding seemed perfectly reasonable.

I rode a route that I used to run (pre-2012, when I was still running) -- the Figure 8 (south along Lohr, east along Ellsworth to Oak Valley, then up and around on Oak Valley over to Waters (where Target is), and then home.

This gave me a ride of 3.9 miles in 34 minutes.

Wednesday, 6/26/2024 - 31st outdoor ride of 2024

2024 MILEAGE - 2364.9

This morning I left about 7:10 and rode a route which was new to me as an entirety, although I've ridden all its separate components before. I'm calling it the Washtenaw/Pauline loop ... staying (as always) entirely on walks and trails, of course, I started out like when I ride the Packard/Platt Square, except that when I got to Platt, instead of turning right, I turned left (north) and rode up to Washtenaw. I rode along it northwest until I reached Stadium, and then followed that up past the Big House, and then went west on Pauline over to Maple, and then home past the Ice Cube and the library. Conditions were cloudy throughout the ride; when I began, the temperature of 69° felt heavenly, and during my ride it climbed to 74°.

This gave me a ride of 13.7 miles in 1:58.

2024 MILEAGE - 2351.2

After two consecutive days off (Sunday, which I frequently [but not invariably] take as a rest day and yesterday as I was working hard on a band composition), I had hoped to get back to it today with a good outdoor ride. However, thunderstorms were forecast to moving in during the morning, so I opted to ride inside instead, on our stationary cycle. (This proved to be a good decision, as thunder rumbled rigorously overhead during my ride.)

Both John and Christy (my son and daughter) have spoken very positively to me recently about a 2004 Tom Hanks film that I never saw (The Terminal), so I watched that during my ride, and enjoyed it.

This gave me a ride of 22.8 virtual miles in 2:02.

Saturday, 6/22/2024 - 30th outdoor ride of 2024

2024 MILEAGE - 2328.4

The last couple of days I hadn't ridden. In addition to our stretch of high heat continuing, on Thursday night Michelle returned from her big school trip to Europe, and I had to pick her up at Metro airport late, and napped in preparation for that. Yesterday I was deeply embedded in a composition project.

Today, then, I got back to it, by leaving at just past 7:30 and riding the Packard/Platt Square ... 73° when I began, and up to 84° already when I finished. However, my time and speed were inaccurate, due to an error that I discovered when I stopped for my typical break at Lillie Park. I usually pause for roughly five minutes, and today when I was done, I went to restart the MapMyRide app .... but saw that it was already going, and so had been ticking off time all the while I was stopped there, going nowhere.

On the closing stretch I saw Doug Franklin again, on his daily walk, and reflected on the fact that we clearly had the same idea .... to get out there early and beat the worst of the day's heat.

The app measured me with a ride of 13.7 miles in 1:58.

2024 MILEAGE - 2314.7

For the last 10 days, Michelle has been co-leading (along with the orchestra director at their school) a music sightseeing trip to Austria and Italy for a group of roughly 20 students and a few adults. She returns tonight (after a long day of travel), and since she has seen Mozart's birth house on the trip, as well as the palace in Austria where he performed, I thought it would be appropriate to watch Amadeus during my ride today.

This gave me a ride of 30.6 virtual miles in 2:54.

Tuesday, 6/18/2024 - 29th outdoor ride of 2024

2024 MILEAGE - 2284.1

This morning, I had wanted to do my most frequent ride (a loop of 13.6 miles). I was encouraged to begin my ride a bit psst 7:00 in early morning 72° sunshine, yet beating the high heat which is to continue all week.

However, my battery would not work with the phone, and that would not have permitted such a ride. I don't dare skate too close to the edge of perhaps losing use of my phone, in case I have problems and need to contact Uber. So I cut my plans back, and just rode the round trip to Marsh Park, since I know I cana make that ride with a fully charged phone.

This gave me a ride of 10.0 miles in 1:26.

2024 MILEAGE - 2274.1

Yesterday, for Father's Day, I treated myself to a rest day.

Over the last few years, the highly acclaimed television series The Chosen, which shows the tales of the Gospels, has been introduced to great popularity. I was late to catch on, but finally early this year I began watching the first three seasons, which are available online, during my indoor rides. I first began on February 25, and finished up on March 18.

Since then I have been awaiting the release of Season 4, and it just recently became available. Today I watched the first two episodes (Promises, and Confessions.)

This gave me, today, a ride of 25.0 virtual miles in 2:14.

Saturday, 6/15/2024 - 28th outdoor ride of 2024

2024 MILEAGE - 2249.1

This morning I enjoyed yet another resplendent spring day for my ride. Setting off a couple of minutes before 7:00, in bright unbroken sunshine that lasted throughout the ride, conditions were calm and the temperature a brisk 53°. This cool air actually felt quite good, though, and I welcomed it. I rode a round trip to the far west side of Saline, where the sidewalk runs out (about a mile beyond Wellers).

It was good to do a strong ride today, on the heels of an unexpected day off yesterday. I had planned to ride first thing in the morning—always a good plan, as it prevents the intrusion of unexpected events—but several things arose that I needed to deal with, so I spent the morning doing that. Then after lunching with a dear, longtime friend in Saline, I went and got my hair cut and beard trimmed ... both needed, but especially the beard. And then, as the day was heating up, I decided to ride inside on our stationary cycle; but when I do that, I generally watch a video in order to maintain my sanity. That option, however, was unavailable to me, as Xfinity was doing work that had interrupted out internet service. That's not to say that I COULDN'T have ridden without watching a film ... but I've grown so dependent on that, I chose not to, and instead dug into a new composition project that was calling to me.

This gave me, today, a ride of 15.7 miles in 2:08.

Thursday, 6/13/2024 - 27th outdoor ride of 2024

2024 MILEAGE - 2233.4

I love, love, LOVE being able to ride early, and this morning I set off at 6:20. This was fairly conservative for me at this time of year, though, as my record one late June day a few years ago was a ride that began a bit before 5 a,m. Today, at 6:20, the skies were thickly cloudy, but I stayed dry until the second half of the ride, when a few light raindrops began falling, and then increased in intensity in the final minutes of the ride. However, I saw a rainbow when I stopped at Lillie Park, and took that as a good sign. Also, unlike yesterday's ride, today I experienced no health issues.

This gave me a ride of 13.6  miles in 1:49.

Wednesday, 6/12/2024 - 26th outdoor ride of 2024

2024 MILEAGE - 2219.8

I had the joy of riding this morning with Christy. She brought her bike over, and we set off about 7:15 in a brisk 57° chill. We rode the Packard/Platt Square, largely without incident. However ...

Towards the end, my neck, which had been hurting me most of the ride, had weakened, so that my head was lolling back, tilting my gaze up to the sky. I could still see to ride, out of the bottom part of my field of vision, but Christy was quite concerned, and even though I could have pushed on the rest of the way home, I allowed her to prevail upon me to be seated on a bench with about 2 miles left to go, and let her ride on home to pick up her van and come get me and the trike. So now, I am most delighted to be relaxing in my recliner, with good support for my neck.

This gave me a ride of 11.5  miles in 1:49.

Tuesday, 6/11/2024 - 25th outdoor ride of 2024

2024 MILEAGE - 2208.3

Michelle left this morning for 10 days (she is co-leading a student trip from her school to Europe). While she is gone, it is my intent to be extra diligent about riding and controlling my eating, so that she returns to a noticeably trimmer "chubby hubby."

Today I left at 12:40 in bright 72° sunshine to ride the Platt/Packard Square, and the sunshine persisted, while the temperature climbed ever so slightly, to 73°.

This gave me a ride of 13.7 miles in 1:48.

Monday, 6/10/2024 - 24th outdoor ride of 2024

2024 MILEAGE - 2194.6

As I said on Friday, I could not ride the last two days because Michelle and went on an out-of-town road trip. So this afternoon I got back into it, leaving at 3:15 and riding the Packard/Platt Square quite slowly. It was a pleasantly cool day for a ride, cloudy and 67° when I began, and up to 69° when I finished.

This gave me a ride of 13.6 miles in 1:54.

Friday, 6/7/2024 - 23rd outdoor ride of 2024

2024 MILEAGE - 2181.0

I'm in the midst of an extremely weak stretch of riding. Yesterday. I was (inexplicably) absolutely exhausted, and so gave myself the day off. And this afternoon we are leaving on a little weekend getaway, to I will not be able to ride again until Monday.

In light of these sobering realities, I rode the Platt/Ellsworth Rectangle today—not a great ride by any means, but a tolerable one, on a modestly cool day (63° when I began at 9:15, up to 67° at the end, and cloudy throughout).

This gave me a ride of 12.0 miles in 1:39.

Wednesday, 6/5/2024 - 22nd outdoor ride of 2024

2024 MILEAGE - 2169.0

II could not ride yesterday, as it was a very busy day, due to two  factors. (1) The need to make several trips (including one up to  Brighton) to track down a replacement fob for our pool, as I lost mine over the winter. (2) Intense work on a composition in which I was deeply invested. (I finished it last night.)

It was good, then, to be able to get back to it today, riding the Packard/Platt Square in seasonable conditions. (73° when I began, at 9:15; 77° when I finished [rain is coming this afternoon], with cloudy skies throughout.)

This gave me a ride of 13.7 miles in 1:48.

Monday, June 3, 2024 - 21st outdoor ride of 2024

2024 MILEAGE - 2155.3

I had hoped to do a more substantial ride todau. But I had to spend nearly 4 hours online with Support from Spotify, trying to resolve an issue with my account, and in the end I had to cut down my riding plans, and ended up being grateful that I could ride at all, since it looked for a while as if it would not be possible. I ended up settling for a round trip to Marsh Park on another superb spring day, sunny and in the lower seventies.

This gave me a ride of 10.3 miles in 1:17.
