2024 MILEAGE - 3502.9
I am currently reading a superb book, which is both highly moving and greatly disturbing—Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson. In it, mention is made several times of the American classic To Kill a Mockingbird: both the 1960 novel by Harper Lee, and the 1962 film adaptation of it starring Gregory Peck.
I had never experienced To Kill a Mockingbird, and decided it was high time that I rectify that omission. So I put in a request for the book this morning from the library, and during my ride this afternoon, I watched the movie.
I was curious how the book was received at the time of its pusblication, and upon Googling this question, I found:
When "To Kill a Mockingbird" was published, contemporary reactions were largely positive, praising its powerful depiction of racism in the American South during the Civil Rights era, with many seeing it as a moving plea for tolerance and a significant commentary on social justice, despite some criticism regarding its portrayal of complex racial issues through a somewhat idealized lens; the novel became immensely popular and won a Pulitzer Prize upon release.
This gave me a ride today of 24.7 virtual miles in 2:10.
I just reread To Kill a Mockingbird this summer. Glad you got to read it!
